Lord Jonathan Devoran St. George, known as Wild Lord Jack, intrepid and solitary world traveler, who returns to England after years of roaming the Far East.

Anne Marsh, sensible Dissenter and already engaged to be married, unwitting possessor of a stolen fossil that Jack would risk his life to recover.

Pursued by desperate killers, Jack sweeps Anne off to his ancestral home at Wyldshay Castle, but proves to be a very dangerous guardian angel.

At a time of lace and rapiers, when men were both beautiful and dangerous, Alden (pronounced All-den) Granville-Strachan (Straw-n), Viscount Gracechurch, who loses everything to his enemies at cards.

Juliet, a mysterious and secretive lady, hiding from the world in a secluded cottage in the English village of Manston Mingate.

Penelope Lindsey, local collector of hedgehogs, bastard cousin of a princess.

Joining Europe's other victorious monarchs after Napoleon's first defeat, Nicholas comes home to England for his state wedding in Regency London.

Instead he catches Penny stealing her prizes from the grounds of Rascall Hall and forces her to stand in for his missing royal bride.

Nicholas's dog, Quest, wolfhound of Glarien.
